Day 3: Tulsa to Amarillo

Oklahoma is okay
For a very short stay.
Highways have tolls
That will test people's souls.
Exact change required to go through
With no advanced notice for you.
Only coins accepted,
And, as you might have expected,
How many people have you seen,
Who had exactly a dollar fifteen?

Weather was forecast to be pretty hot for today's ride, so Curt and I decided to get up early and make the jaunt to Amarillo before the heat of the afternoon.  I was awakened by thunder around 5am.  Radar looked bad, so we got our rain gear ready to go.  By the time we finished breakfast, the storms fizzled, so we hit the road without the rain gear, and never saw a drop.  Actually, a very nice morning ride.  Around 11am, it started getting warm, but not too bad.

We made a visit to a famous hamburger place, Lucille's Roadhouse, in Hydo, OK.  Woo hoo.

We stopped at the Cadillac Ranch, where some eccentric rich guy decided to make a graveyard for old Cadillacs.  Anyone who's driven Rt 66 has probably seen it.  This was really exciting.   (sarcasm)

We arrived at the hotel in Amarillo nice and early, and enjoyed a beer while waiting for our rooms to be prepped.  Nice place and friendly people.

Tomorrow, on to Alamogordo, NM.  Then, Kristin's place!!!

Here are some pics of today's ride:

The Bikes, in front of Lucilles....seems to be a trend.

All I could think of was, "I can't believe there aren't any restrooms."

Waiting for the room to be available...

  2. Sandy's dad spent WW2 in Alamogordo, NM, making atomic bombs. I spent a couple of weeks in the desert just south of there "camping" in the Army many years ago.
